Calving Season: When is Optimal for Your Ranch?

More than 60 attendees, primarily students in the MSU Department of Animal and Range Sciences, gathered in Bozeman to hear Burke Teichert discuss the importance of finding the right calving season to fit your environment and resources. 

Mr. Teichert spent the morning discussing the implications of calving season on supplementation, winter grazing opportunities and selection of replacement females.

The group then traveled to the Red Bluff Research Ranch to tour the pasturesand learn more about the challenges and opportunities of moving calving season, specifically providing adequate high-quality forage during breed-up.

The evening wrapped up with a producer panel featuring ranchers from Montana and Idaho discussing their respective changes in calving season and the opportunities it has opened up for their family and operations.
